| These records consist of marriage licenses issued by the justices of the peace for St. Croix County, Wisconsin Territory, between 1843 and 1849 and/or certificates that these marriages had been performed, either by a justice of the peace or by a clergyman. The justices were headquartered in Stillwater, where these records were retained. Ultimately, they formed part of the first records of Washington County, Minnesota Territory. Conversations with court personnel indicate that these records were never recorded in the marriage volumes (at least in what became Washington County). Whether or not they were recorded in the official St. Croix County, Wisconsin, records is unknown. They are arranged by court assigned number (that roughly equates to a chronological sequence). | |||||||||||
| These marriages occurred throughout that part of St. Croix County east of the Mississippi River and west of the St. Croix River, including such places as LaPointe, Grey Cloud, Pokegama Mission, Willow River, Kaposia, Crescent Hill, Cottage Grove, Stillwater, St. Paul, and Red Stone Prairie. Clergy signing the marriage certificates include W. T. Boutwell, Augustin Ravoux, and Benjamin Close. The following lists each license, with its date. No attempts have been made to verify spellings of names; in some cases, varying dates may appear on the same document. | |||||||||||
