Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Washington County board of commissioners purchased land for the poor farm in 1858. During the 19th century, residents were men, women, and dependent children of all ages, as well as, from time to time, the insane and mentally retarded. The farm, originally 207 acres, sold whatever produce and livestock its residents did not consume. Gradually the poor farm became primarily a home for the aged, called at various times after 1925, the County Home and the Board and Care Home, until in 1951, under authority of Chapter 610, Laws of 1951, the Pine Point Nursing Home was established to take over the properties of the county home.
