Topics covered include building construction and remodeling, school closings, publicity, Employer Employee Education [EEE] Day (November 14, 1951), commencements, student presentations and clubs, anniversaries, reunions, magnet schools, and the 1956 St. Paul schools centennial.

The photographs, along with a small number of video and slide presentations, depict classes, buildings, classrooms, student activities, recreations and sports, students with disabilities, anniversaries and dedications, and teachers, staff, visitors, and board members.

Schools with substantive amounts of material include Douglas, Jefferson, Horace Mann, and St. Anthony Park elementary schools, Cleveland, Como Park, Highland Park, and Ramsey junior high schools, and Central, Highland Park, Johnson, Washington, and Wilson high schools. Located in Afton, this 350 acre school is available to students from Saint Paul Public Schools. On site, students experience education in an outdoor setting. Utilizing one of many ecosystems present, teachers lead students in learning activities about such things as acid rain, the life cycle of a seed, or making a plaster cast of an animal footprint.

1. The Board of Education, now in its sixth year of operation since its inauguration in 1951, consists of seven members. They are elected by the citizens of Saint Paul and serve terms of six years on a non-pay basis. From left to right are Gerald J. O’Donnell, Mrs. M. M. Sarnecki, Mrs. Fred L. Paul, Vice President; William T. Coulter, President; Paul W. Mielke, Secretary; Robert H. Tucker, and Charles L. Rafferty.
2. The Saint Paul Public School System consists of: 64 elementary schools, 6 junior high schools, 9 senior high schools, 2 vocational schools.
3. Braille reader – sight-saving class, Ramsey elementary school.
4. Homebound with rheumatic fever, this first grader holds class with his homebound teacher in a built-in schoolroom next to his bedroom.
5. A station wagon is provided for youngsters who can’t negotiate the steps of a regular school bus going to and from school. Mechanic Arts High School.
6. Ancker Hospital TB patient receives weekly visits from her homebound teacher.
7. Since 1950, school bus service has made it possible for the handicapped to attend school regularly. This year nine buses and three station wagons are serving 368 such students. Station wagons are used to transport the severely handicapped.
8. The pleasant atmosphere of the scientifically lighted, ventilated, and equipped classroom of today is in sharp contrast to those of 100 years ago. Second grade teacher Mrs. Dorothy Lokenwitz, Homecroft school, works on a reading lesson with part of her class while others do previous assignments.
9. Special student shows pets to biology classmates. Exceptional children reaching secondary level are aided by special facilities at Mechanic Arts.
10. Large type face in books aids sight-savers at Ramsey Elementary School.

13. Saint Paul Public School students receive innumerable educational experiences through participation in radio and television presentations. Programs include discussions and demonstrations in a wide variety of educational areas such as art, music, drama, science, physical education, social studies, debate, homemaking skills, and journalism activities.
14. Many orthopedic devices are used to improve the walking ability of handicapped students at Lindsay.
15. Mechanic Arts High School, the only secondary school in the city equipped with an elevator to accommodate orthopedic cases.

17. Severely retarded children at Crowley School enjoy gardening activities.
18. Arithmetic is taught in our schools in an efficient and interesting manner. These Homecroft third graders count and work fractions on a flannelboard, compute money exchanges with discs, and use large wall slates which are colored green to reduce eye strain.
19. Hazel Park Junior High School, White Bear and Maryland Avenues, was constructed under the 1953 bond issue and went into operation in September, 1955. It is the first secondary school added to our system since 1937.
20. Blowing liquid through tubes from one bottle to another is a method of developing breath control. Breath control is necessary in correcting speech defects. Lindsay School.
21. Ann Richmond, third grade teacher at Mississippi Elementary School, views the attire of pioneer Minnesota school marms of the mid-10th century. The dolls are part of a collection at the Minnesota Historical Society. The one at right is a model of Miss Harriet Bishop, who opened a private school in a crude log cabin in Saint Paul in 1847.
22. Homebound teacher discusses studies with bedridden student. He attends class over a two-way telephone system, visible by his right hand.

24. Mechanic Arts football teammates, Jerry Johnson (left) and Mike Larson, display the differences between a modern uniform and the type used at the turn-of-the century. The old suit has virtually no padding; the other scientifically protects the player.
25. Visual and auditory stimulation are used by speech correctionists. Student watches instructor’s lips in the mirror while the modified stethoscope intensifies wanted sounds and reduces stimulation from outside sources. Lindsay Orthopedic School.
26. This artist’s visualization of the interior of a one-room log schoolhouse is based on written accounts by pioneer Minnesota teachers.
27. A special home room is used by cardiac, orthopedic, and cerebral palsy victims during free time as a place for study and relaxation. Mechanic Arts High School.
28. Constructing birdhouses helps teach manual and art skills while doing productive work for severely retarded at Crowley School.
