Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The old Mattocks School, a one room stone structure located at the corner of Randolph Street and Snelling Avenue, was opened in 1871 as Webster School District No. 9 serving the children of Reserve Township. It had been preceded by a wooden one room school opened in 1861 and designated School District No. 2. It was annexed to St. Paul in 1887 and renamed Mattocks School, named for the Reverend John Mattocks, St. Paul Superintendent of Schools, 1860-1872. The school was used until 1929; the last six years, following construction of the new Mattocks School, for special classes only (and renamed Snelling School). From 1932 to 1963, Highland Park Post No. 215 of the American Legion leased the school for $1 per year and maintained and preserved it. In 1964, the building was taken apart stone by stone and reassembled at the Highland Park Senior High School site on South Snelling Avenue, where it is used as an adjunct classroom. The new Mattocks School, a three story building, was opened at James Avenue and Macalester Street in 1924. In 1931, an addition was built with an auditorium. The school served 600 students in Kindergarten through Grade Six. It was closed in 1979, the building demolished, and the land conveyed to the City of St. Paul for redevelopment as a city recreation area.
