Each slip contains a section grid, sketched in and/or annotated to show swamp land, timber types, areas already cut, waterways, and other relevant features; notes on the character, quantity, and often the estimated value of the timber; and the examiner's signature and date. Some penciled entries are very faint and difficult to read. Some land sections were examined at several different times during the period covered by these volumes.

In the later records (Volumes 5-8), the field note slips themselves are variously titled, reflecting the different purposes for which the timber land was being inspected: Trespass Report, Estimate and Appraisal, Report of Cutting Under Permit, and Land Examinations.
