DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Expand/CollapseLETTERS RECEIVED, 1877-1912

Location
115.L.17.8F 1877-1879 (bulk 1878). 6 folders.
Letters from county auditors, attorneys, real estate agents, and citizens to the State Auditor, O. P. Whitcomb, regarding the selling, appraisal, inspection, and private use of school lands and various classifications of state property; improvements to state owned lands; and the deferment of land payments and interest due to the grasshopper plague. Also included are requests for property tax reimbursements; questions of land ownership; surveyors’ offers of service; and questions regarding the taxation of church lands and the new tax law of 1878.
Arranged chronologically.
Location
111.A.18.7B 1879-1896. 12 volumes.
Letters received mainly by W. W. Braden (1882-1891) and Adolph Biermann (1881-1895) as state auditors and land commissioners, and by deputy auditor E. E. Biermann. There are also some handwritten copies of Auditor’s Office outgoing letters.
Each volume appears to contain letters arranged in a very loose alphabetical sequence by names of correspondents (persons and organizations) and counties (usually sent by the county auditor). Volume numbers not listed may either be missing or may be found in other sets of Auditor’s Office letters housed in subordinate departments or agencies.
