Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The state established a naval reserve in 1899; it was redesignated the Minnesota Naval Militia in 1905. Regulations governing the Naval Militia were issued from the commander-in-chief through the Adjutant General. Legislation in 1943 specifically added the Naval Militia into the state's military forces, defined as the National Guard, Naval Militia, and other organizations or components or the organized militia. The Naval Militia was abolished in 1977.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The correspondence deals mainly with supplying naval militia ships stationed in Duluth (U.S.S. Fern, U.S.S. Gopher, U.S.S. Essex, and U.S.S. Paducah), organization and training of naval militia battalions, and repair and maintenance of the ships, boathouses, and docks in Duluth. Most of the correspondence prior to 1924 is between Guy A. Eaton, Lieutenant Commander, Minnesota Naval Militia, Duluth, and the Minnesota Adjutant General and other Navy personnel. Some deals with the granting of commissions as well as supplies, particularly textbooks and uniforms.

The subject files include a 1903 muster-in-roll, inspector-instructor monthly reports (1930-1932), enlistment/reenlistment papers (1925-1933), cruise payroll records (U.S.S. Rhode Island, 1914, 1916; U.S.S. Florida, 1916), and various reports of the Seventh and Ninth Naval Reserve areas (1929-1932) and the Naval Aviation Base in Minneapolis (1934-1937). They also include materials on appropriations, laws and regulations, equipment, expenses, work details, and the U.S.S. Paducah.

The voucher registers list receipts (appropriations) and expenditures for all aspects of the operation of the Naval Militia, including office supplies and maintenance, payrolls, transportation and freight, repairs to ships, and supplies to troops.
