These files comprise the first and final drafts of the narrative portion of that history, supplemented by transcripts of reports and orders, regimental chronologies, other background notes, and correspondence and clippings regarding preparation and issuance of the history.

Although the final drafts largely duplicate the text of the published history, there are some discrepancies. The other materials are not included in the published history.

Also present are a few minutes, financial notes, progress report, and miscellany (1903-1904) of an earlier commission that made an abortive attempt to compile a similar history and a report and transcript of proceedings of a court martial of Harry A. Leonhaeuser, colonel of the 15th Minnesota (1899).

It did not finish this work due to lack of funds.
