DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Location
115.K.16.2FReceipts for Seed Grain, 1874. 1 folder.
Receipt forms for grain distributed by a commission appointed by Governor C. K. Davis under an act of the legislature "to aid destitute settlers upon the frontier" (Laws 1874 c108). This law appropriated up to $25,000 to subsidize the purchase of seed grain for settlers who could not afford to purchase it. The commissioners were David Day, Stephen Miller, and R. W. Johnson.
Information recorded: number of bushels, type of grain, number of acres to be seeded, signature, date, signature of witness (justice of the peace or notary public), and usually township and/or county name.
Seed Grain Register, 1887. 1 volume.
A record of seed grain distribution compiled by the Swift County auditor and, apparently, submitted to the Governor's office. Each entry gives contract number, name of contractor, date of contract, amount of each kind of grain received and the cost per bushel, total sum due the state, and description of lands owned or occupied by the contractor.
There is no accompanying information on the origin or purpose of this register, but it probably documents Swift County's participation in a state program to distribute seed grain to counties in which crops had been destroyed by hail. Laws 1887 c182 describes this program in detail.
Lists of Seed Grain Loans, 1920. 1 folder.
Lists of notes issued in payment of seed grain loans in Beltrami, Marshall, Pennington, and Roseau counties, under the direction of the State Board of Relief. For loans Nos. 1-488, totalling $59,812.98. Each entry gives loan number, date, name, address (township or village), and dollar amount of loan.
Current state law authorized counties to lend money to residents to purchase seed and feed for teams in instances of crop failure (see Laws 1919 c49). The law did not address the role of the State Board of Relief.
