Volume [1], Indexes to Declarations of Intention (First Papers), Volumes A-M, 1858-1905.

Each entry in the volume gives the applicant's surname and given name, the volume and page containing the person's declaration, and the year the declaration was filed. These entries are repeated in alphabetical order in Volume [2].

The names in the index are grouped alphabetically according to the first letter of each applicants surname; within each alphabetical grouping the names are listed chronologically in the order in which the declarations were recorded.

Entries are used as an index to the Declarations of Intention (First Papers), Volumes A-M, 1858-1905; miscellaneous supporting papers, 1866-1902, 1910, which are affixed to pages 77-249 of Final Papers, Volume A; and the record of citizenship granted, i.e., the issuance of final (second) papers, found in the Minnesota Supreme Court Minutes, Volumes A-M, 1858-1906 (also housed in the Minnesota Historical Society). Each entry in the volume gives the person's surname and given name, the volume and page in Declarations Volumes A-M containing the person's declaration of intention, and/or the volume and page in the minute books where the granting of citizenship is recorded. The letter "A" and number enclosed in parenthesis, e.g., A108, in the "Remarks" column indicates the presence of supporting papers for the individual in Final Papers, Volume A, on the page noted.

The names in the index are in alphabetical order by surname and given name.

NATURALIZATION RECORDS (MICROFILM SAM 103)

Declaration of Intention (First Papers)

Each volume, except for Volume A, contains an index. These records declare the intention of aliens to become citizens of the United States. From 1858 through 1866, each form records the person's surname and given name, date of arrival in the United States, the foreign allegiance being renounced, and the date of the declaration. As of 1867, date and place of birth and port of entry also are recorded.

The declarations volumes are arranged in alphabetical order according to the alpha designation given them by the Supreme Court. Within each volume the entries are in chronological order. The overlapping dates of the volumes for the years 1883-1888 and 1890-1894 indicate that declarations were recorded in more than one volume during these years.

Final Papers (Second Papers)

Each volume contains an index. These records include, for each individual, adults and minors, affidavits of witnesses, the applicant's oath of allegiance, and the court order approving the application for citizenship. Volume A also contains miscellaneous supporting papers consisting primarily of declarations of intention, affidavits, and related documents that probably were turned in when applicants applied for final citizenship papers, as well as some citizenship oaths.

The final papers are arranged chronologically. The miscellaneous supporting papers are in roughly alphabetical order by surname and given name. Since some forms are not filled out completely, not all information may be present for every individual.
