Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The town of Byron was organized as a township in 1900. Phile Powell offered to finance the organization if the township would be named after his son, Byron, who is said to be the first white child born in the township. Andrew Clark, Ole Koken, and Philo Powell were the first supervisors. Charles Van Amber was the first town clerk. He was succeeded in 1905 by Louis Thorsett and held continuously by him until 1937, when he retired.

The first postmaster was Joe Ellis. The first post office was established in 1886 in the log house on the farm that is now known as the Walter Olson farm. Later it was transferred to Nate Palmer on what is now known as the Roy Williams farm. It was then transferred to what became known as the village of Ellis, where a store, a blacksmith shop and a saw mill had been built. A past office was also established at Esterdy in the Koken home.

From History of Byron Township by Roy Carr, October 14, 1949.
