SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The 1861 report contains a report from the Bull Run battlefield and a list of persons sheltered at Fort Ridgely. The 1862 report contains more than 100 pages of narrative on the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862; lists of dead, discharged, deserted, and transferred soldiers; and an additional report to the extra session of the state legislature. Reports from the Civil War years contain detailed reports from Minnesota units in the field, muster rolls, casualty lists, and general and special orders.
Reports from the 1870s contain reports from the trustees, superintendent, and secretary/treasurer of the Soldiers Orphans' Home. The 1870 report also includes lists of Minnesota soldiers buried at various cemeteries throughout the east and south. In the 1880s, National Guard rosters, camp reports, property accounts, paymaster's reports, and rifle practice reports appear. The 1890 report contains narratives on the Sea Wing disaster (shipwreck) and on strikes in Duluth and Cloquet. The 1898 report contains muster-in-rolls of recruits in the Spanish-American War. The 1900 report contains lists of Minnesota soldiers who lost their life during this conflict as well as an alphabetical list of all Minnesotans who served in that war.
The 1906 report contains an inspection report from the ship the U.S.S. Gopher, as well as minutes from the 26th and 27th annual conventions of the Minnesota National Guard Association. The 1918 report contains draft board statistics by county, as well as reports of activities of the Minnesota Home Guard, established by the Commission on Public Safety. The 1924 report, in addition to the usual rosters and orders, contains a report on the soldiers bonus payment program, 1919-1924, and a report on the cyclone relief effort in Lyon, Lincoln, Redwood, and Cottonwood Counties.
Reports beginning in the 1970s may also be titled Military Affairs Department annual reports, Minnesota National Guard annual reports, or other variations and may include reports about other entities managed by the Adjutant General. The reports begin as biennial reports and continue from the 1990s as annual reports.
