Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

Saint Paul Public LibraryThe Saint Paul Public Library system started as a reading room in the Young Men's Christian Association in 1856. It was established as a free public library by the city council on September 7, 1882 and housed in the old Market Hall on Seventh Street until a fire in 1915 destroyed the entire building. The new Central Library, which was already under construction in 1914, opened in 1917 and included the James J. Hill Reference Library. The library expanded in the next decades, opening multiple branches and forming the Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library to stimulate use and support of the library in 1945. The Central Library was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and underwent a major renovation from 2000 to 2002.
