The St. James Orphan Home (Duluth) records and the adoption register appear to have been created and maintained by the Archdiocese of Duluth and/or Bureau of Catholic Charities. The maternity patient registers appear to have been created and maintained by St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. For unknown reasons, the records became the property of the St. Louis County Public Health and Human Services Department, probably to assist the county in overseeing adoption services.

Access to adoption records less than 100 years old is available only with a court order.

Information includes child’s name, address, nationality, complexion, age, baptism date, confirmation date, First Holy Communion date, religion, date arrived, and date departed, recommendation, remarks, and parent/guardian name. Arranged in chronological order by date of admission.

The register lists children that were still living in the orphanage when the register was started with entries carried over from the previous volume (dated June 1900-August 1903). Also includes temporary admissions (dated August 1913-October 1920; pages 208-211); treatment information for children concerning tonsils, adenoids, eyes and teeth (dated 1928-1930; pages 212-217).
