Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Pine Island Civilian Conservation Corp camp was established on June 21, 1933 and operated until August 1934. The site sat idle until January 1935, when it became a transient camp under the Work Project Administration (WPA) and State Emergency Relief Administration. On May 15, 1936, it was placed under the United States Department of Agriculture's Resettlement Administration, as Project LD-MN4, the Northern Minnesota Pine Island Settler Relocation Project. The purpose of the project was to purchase 25,000 acres of cut-over and virgin land on which a comprehensive development program would be carried out with a view to applying the most approved practices in forestry and wildlife. The project area was transferred to the Farm Security Administration on June 30, 1937 and to the Soil Conservation Service in November 1938. On June 30, 1940, the area was placed under the United States Forest Service, which transferred its operation to the Minnesota Conservation Department's Forestry Division under a 50-year lease. Much of the work done in the area during the 1930s and early 1940s was done by WPA workers.
