PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT:

The Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education (MBFTE) was first established via state law in 2000 after a recommendation by the Firefighter Training Study Committee, which was created in 1997 to assess the condition of firefighter training throughout Minnesota. The Board initially had a three-year life span but was revived in 2005 through another state law. Goals of the Board initially included improving state instruction for firefighters, reviewing curriculum and instruction, and increasing the number of qualified firefighter instructors. In 2009 the legislature enabled the Board to license firefighters, making Minnesota the first state in the country to have licensure for firefighters. The mission of the board as of 2019 is to "promote excellence in the fire service by funding standardized training and through the licensing of firefighters in Minnesota."
