HISTORICAL NOTE
The Central Minnesota Arts Council was created in 1977 as a result of a legislative appropriation to the Minnesota State Arts Board for the purpose of establishing arts task forces in each of the regional development commission districts (Laws 1976 c3 s5 subd4). The intent was to create a more effective arts program by establishing regional control over grants and programs.
The Central Minnesota Arts Council (CMAC) represented Region 7W comprising Stearns, Benton, Wright, and Sherburne counties (Laws 1969 c1122, Regional Development Act). Between 1977 and 1979 the CMAC was linked to both the Minnesota State Arts Board (MSAB) and the Central Minnesota Regional Development Commission (CMRDC), with the MSAB granting funds and the CMRDC acting as fiscal agent. The CMAC filed reports with the CMRDC regarding its activities.
In January, 1979, the CMAC and CMRDC dissolved their association by mutual agreement and the CMAC incorporated as a non-profit organization. Between 1979 and 1982 the MSAB continued to fund the CMAC through block grants. However, beginning in 1982 the Minnesota legislature began appropriating funds directly to the CMAC. The CMAC files reports with the MSAB.
The Central Minnesota Arts Council consists of 16 appointed members serving four-year terms. It continues to function as a non-profit organization providing grants and fellowships to individuals and organizations in the literary, performing, creative, and visual arts.
