Expand/CollapseBIRTH REGISTERS, 1870-1934

At some point, county personnel went through the birth reports of local jurisdictions (see Reels 78-83) and typed specific information about each birth into bound volumes. Information transcribed in volumes A-C includes: date of birth, name, sex, color, when registered, father’s name and birthplace (sometimes age), mother’s name and birthplace (sometimes age), and occupation of father. Information transcribed in volume D includes: name of child, whether a single or multiple birth; number in order of birth; number of children born to this mother; whether legitimate or not; date and hour of birth; name, age, color, birthplace and occupation of father and mother; name of person reporting of the birth (physician, midwife, etc.) and date of report; name and address of person registering the birth (town clerk, health officer) and date filed. The originals of these retyped, abbreviated records for 1870-1934 are listed on reels 3-4, below. The post-1934 copies of these records are available in the county auditor’s office.

The register entries are arranged by year, thereunder alphabetically by reporting jurisdiction (township/city/etc.), and then chronological.

Expand/CollapseDELAYED BIRTH RECORDS, 1867-1950

RESTRICTED.

Arranged numerically by unique identifier, which correlates to the book, page, and line number of the Washington County Delayed Birth Register (on microfilm). Each delayed birth record has its own file and contains a delayed birth certificate and may contain supporting documentation. To locate a specific delayed birth record in this series, researchers must first look up the name in the Washington County Delayed Birth Index on microfilm (SAM 234, roll 4) and note the book, page, and line number for the record. These numbers are what make up the unique identifier; e.g. book 1, page 2, line 36 in the delayed birth index turns into 1-2-36 on the file.

Expand/CollapseBIRTH REPORTS OF LOCAL JURISDICTIONS, 1870-1910

These records are the (usually) annual transcripts of births reported by each local registrar (township clerk, village clerk, or city clerk or health officer). From 1907, they may be individual certificates documenting each birth as submitted by the local registrar to the county clerk of court. These records generally contain the most complete record (in terms of information recorded) about these births. Basic information has been transcribed in birth registers A-D above. After 1900 most of this information also was forwarded to the state Health Department. The birth reports are arranged alphabetically by reporting jurisdiction and thereunder roughly chronological.
