Lawrence B. Ritter began working for the Forestry Service in July 1929. He became an expert in white pine blister rust control and in the 1930s began a control program in Minnesota. It culminated with publication of the Blister Rust Control Field Manual and a pictorial review of the program around 1945. Ritter retired from forestry in 1964 but worked as a land appraiser for the Parks Department until 1983. Ritter died in October 1997 at the age of 91.
