Both the correspondence and subject files document a wide range of topics relating to city operations and policies, including planning and economic development, arts and culture, biotechnology, budget and finance, education, police and fire safety, human rights, housing, labor relations, 2002 inauguration, libraries, environmental protection, a proposed baseball stadium, parks and recreation, Mississippi River front development, public works, property taxes, citywide ban on smoking, transit, and relations with the city attorney, city council, state officials, and the state’s congressional delegation.

The correspondence also contains files from department and office/director meetings and letters in which the mayor expresses support for various issues, programs, and people; while the subject files may include reports, pamphlets, speeches, correspondence, minutes, agendas, plans, articles, and photographs.

There is also a small set of subject files kept by the mayor’s assistant, Mark Engebretson. Topics covered in those files include Ayd Mill Road corridor opening; correspondence with city, county, and school officials, Minnesota and St. Paul companies, and state and federal agencies; and the mayor’s veto messages.
