Title:Brainerd Office Files.
Dates:1959-1984.
Language:Materials in English.
Abstract:Files of the Forestry Division's Brainerd regional office (Region 1 until 1969, then Region 3), which was responsible for forestry operations across central Minnesota, and of the region's Brainerd area office (Area 4 until 1963, then Area 31). Both are headquartered in the city of Brainerd, and for a time shared office facilities. The files contain correspondence, memoranda, reports, statistics, and background materials documenting all aspects of forestry and forest land management in the region and area, as well as local interest and participation in forestry issues and forest development activities.
Quantity:17.9 cubic feet (18 boxes).
Location: See Detailed Description for shelf locations.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The files focus in particular on forestation and forest management work, the department's cooperative forestry and private forest management programs and services, forest fire prevention and control, public education activities, general public relations, and administration of the regional and area offices and personnel. Other topics on which there is information include state forest campgrounds, the Minnesota Memorial Hardwood Forest, the Agricultural Conservation Program (1960-1971), forest roads, youth and other work programs, watershed protection, development of markets for wood products, and Christmas trees. There are work plans, budgets, and accomplishment reports and statistics, and minutes of regional and area staff meetings. Until 1975, when a separate Bureau of Land was created, the files also document state land acquisition and sale, disposition of county tax-forfeited lands, timber and stumpage sales, and the issuance of homesite leases and special use permits in state forests.

The files are not complete; they comprise those of regional forest supervisors James E. Spangler (1959-1964 only, although he remained in that post until circa 1975), John Rodewald (1976-1979), and Darwin Anderson (1979-1984), and of Area 4/31 supervisors C. Homer Whiting (1959-Jan. 1964), Arthur J. Ward (1964-1974), and Clifford H. Carlson (1974-1982).
