SCOPE AND CONTENTS
These case files are in very poor physical condition. Their organization is also very confused. There appear to be three numbering systems. There are "old file numbers" (boxes 1-18), "new file numbers" (boxes 19-20), and "unnumbered files" (at the end of boxes 1-7). The old number system includes numbers 129-320, with a few gaps, and dates from approximately 1857-approximately 1890. Several cases have been assigned the same number, usually from 6 to 12 files per file number. The earliest file numbers do not correspond with the earliest dates. Groups of files with the same number are kept together either by being bound with string or filed together in a packet. The files are labeled, but due to their physical condition, identification may be difficult.
The files with the new file numbers date from approximately 1890-approximately 1898, with a few exceptions from 1901 and 1922. However, none of these files are numbered. This particular portion of the set may be the missing files from the other civil case files series, which begins in 1892 with file no. 299.
The unnumbered case files at the end of boxes 1-7 date from 1891-approximately 1897. These files may be from the new file number system, but for some reason were never filed with the main set.
