The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Alumni and Volunteer Programs unit was formally established in 1984, and
initially was funded with support from the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources. The unit had a two-directional
focus: responding to requests from the public to be involved in DNR activities, and responding to requests from DNR staff
for assistance from the public. Currently, more than 14,000 volunteers enable the DNR to expand and improve services to
the public, and help to preserve and enhance Minnesota's natural beauty for the enjoyment of people of all ages, interests
and abilities. Volunteer opportunities occur throughout the state at State Parks, State Forest Campgrounds, Wildlife Management
Areas, fisheries and hatcheries, the 150+ DNR area offices, four regional headquarter offices, the St. Paul Central Office and
at special event sites.
