| Correspondence directed to the Finance Department from the governor’s office for reply. They include letters from finance commissioners Gordon Donhowe and Jay Kiedrowski, as well as various assistant commissioners, including the state budget director. In most of the letters, constituents (including a few mayors, state senators and representatives, and other elected officials) express concerns about continued state funding for various programs. Among the programs discussed are the State Arts Board, a new biomedical sciences and engineering building for the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Employment and Economic Development (MEED) Program in the Department of Jobs and Training, various historic sites run by the Minnesota Historical Society, and the Minnesota Zoo (see April 1987 letters from grade-school children). Other letters express concerns about high taxes and the high cost of government programs, property tax relief, fears that the sales tax will be extended to include food and clothing, and funding of pensions for pre-1973 state retirees. | |||||||||||
