Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The lieutenant governor's office was responsible for coordinating the state's tourism efforts. The tourism correspondence (November 1982-1988) includes correspondence and memos from Office of Tourism director Hank Todd, from interested individuals and businesses, and from other state agencies and covers such a diverse range of topics as legislation; travel studies and indicators; resorts; ideas and proposals for promotional programs; educational activities; media coverage; tourism conferences, particularly the Annual Governor's Conference on Tourism; songs; sports, including the fishing opener; and tourist trade publications. The files also contain samples of promotions used by the Office of Tourism, by private businesses and organizations, and by local and city governments and reports of the Energy, Planning and Development Department's Tourism Division.

The Office of Tourism files (1983-1990) include annual workplans, a 1984 awareness/image study of Minnesota as a tourism destination, a 1990 strategic planning report, an office briefing manual, reviews of the office's marketing efforts, news releases, statistics, and correspondence, mainly copies of memos sent or received by Director Todd, forwarded to Johnson to keep her up to date on the office's activities.

The tourism subject files cover a wide variety of tourism related events and topics, including community and other festivals, hiking trails, sports, historic property restoration, wildlife, music and arts, bed and breakfasts, bikeways, films, conventions, the fishing opener, travel information centers, and joint venture marketing funds. Specific events and organizations include the Tourism Economic Recovery Commission, Voyageurs National Park, Lieutenant Governor's Bicycle Ride, Tour of Minnesota Bicycle Race, and Taste of Minnesota.
