Many of the entries in each set duplicate one another for the years 1849-1898, but both sets have been microfilmed because of discrepancies between some entries. Set A is more complete, i.e., contains more names, than Set B.

The volumes in each set of indexes are divided into two sub-series, one indexing the case files by name of defendant, the other indexing them by name of plaintiff. The volumes in each sub-series are arranged in chronological order. Within each volume, names are recorded alphabetically according to Schlicht's Standard Index system, which is explained at the beginning of each volume. The entries in the volumes indexing by defendant give the case file number, the defendant's name, the plaintiff's name, and the month, day, and year of action. The entries in the volumes indexing by plaintiff give the case file number, the plaintiff's name, the defendant's name, and the month, day, and year of action.

There are two series of case file numbers, one for the territorial period (1849-May 1858) and another for statehood (beginning May 21, 1858). The numerals in some dates and in some case file numbers have been transposed. Variations in the spelling of a name may change the location of an entry in the index, so all possible spelling variations of a name may need to be checked. Additional plaintiff and defendant names, referred to by the phrase et al, sometimes, but not always, have been recorded as separate index entries.
