Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The discharge index is alphabetical by surname and refers to book and page number of the record book where the soldier’s discharge certificate is recorded. Entries in the index cite volumes 1, 7 and 8. Although the target on the microfilm gives a date span of 1898- for the index, the entries themselves begin in 1917.

The record book (“Record of Soldier’s and Sailor’s Discharges 1”) contains extracts from or transcripts of official discharge papers filed with the county recorder by persons returning from military services. Filing dates span 1919 through 1971 and include records of those serving in World War I, World War II, the Korean conflict and beyond. Entries are listed in chronological order.

Each discharge record gives the soldier’s name, military identification number, citation to authority for discharge, birthplace and date, physical description (color of eyes and hair, complexion, height), and date of discharge. It usually includes enlistment date and place, grade or rank, and a summary of service history. It many include qualifications (horsemanship, marksmanship, etc.), vocation and training information, battles or skirmishes engaged in, wounds received, physical condition and character upon discharge, vaccinations and marital status.

Note: Roll 28 Soldier Discharge records begin at Item No. 4.
