RED WING STATE TRAINING SCHOOL:

Located near Rochester, Minnesota, the Youth Vocational Center was established in 1961 as a vocational training facility for approximately 50 boys, ages 16 through 18, transferred from the State Training School in Red Wing. The center was to both prepare the boys for future employment through vocational training and counseling in the areas of automotive mechanics, cooking, and small engine repair and provide academic tutoring in tenth through twelfth grade subjects applicable towards credits for a diploma from their home school. Additionally, the boys received training in such functionally related classes as remedial reading and mathematics and social living. Counseling, where the boys met both individually with caseworkers and attended group sessions, and leisure time, which provided opportunity to become acquainted with many meaningful activities, associations, and individuals, were also important components to the center's training. The center ceased operation in 1969.
