Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

While topics vary from report to report, most contain financial statements (covering salaries and office, postage, travel, and equipment expenses), a summary of court decisions, lists of cases prosecuted with fines collected, lists of creameries by county, and a reproduction of Minnesota laws passed dealing with dairy and food products.

Some issues include reports of the chief chemist, which contain studies on the chemical composition of milk, butter, oleomargarine, cheese, and other food products. Other issues include commission bulletins, statistical tables, barn inspection reports (larger cities), herd inspection reports (number of cows, stable conditions, milk produced, etc.), as well as the scores of winners of milk and butter contests at county, state, and national exhibitions. Also included are analyses of milk, butter, cheese, vinegar, lard, wine, honey, syrup, and spice samples conducted by the commission's St. Paul lab and by the field inspectors.

The typescript biennial reports are largely or entirely duplicated by the printed reports. Most of the typescript supplemental reports, which include financial statements, a few annual activity reports, reports of dairy inspections (1890, 1893), and a laboratory report on powdered milk (1921) probably are not duplicated in the printed reports.

The 1st and 2d biennial reports (1885-1888) were issued by the State Dairy Commissioner. The remainder were produced by or for the State Dairy and Food Commissioner.
