LocationReel
SAM 4261Township Birth Records, 1870-1908. 5 reels and 1 partial reel:
This series of birth records consists of two main units of records: “returns” of birth sent to the county clerk of court by the town/village/city clerk and “birth amendments” gathered by the county clerk of court to provide additional documentation on births that were inadequately reported to the county clerk at the time of the birth.
Returns of births were sent periodically, usually annually, to the clerk of court and give the date of birth, name, sex, and color of the child; names, ages, and birthplaces of parents; and the date registered. After 1898, the occupation of the parents, number of children born to the mother, and name of physician are included. All elements of the return are not completed for all births. Returns are arranged by reporting jurisdiction in roughly alphabetical order and thereunder are filed in roughly chronological order. The returns date from 1870 to 1908, although reports are not complete for all jurisdictions.
Birth amendments include affidavits of corrections to incomplete birth records and related documents, or copies of documents, proving that a birth occurred. These include, among other items, baptismal certificates, extracts from church records, copies of state or federal census entries, school records extracts or school census entries, life insurance policies, or signed affidavits of individuals present at the birth. The births covered by these amendments date from 1870 (frequently later for individual jurisdictions) to 1908. They are arranged by jurisdiction of birth and thereunder chronologically by date of birth (not date of the document supporting the birth). Most of the documents contained in the birth amendments unit were prepared between 1940 and 1970.
