ANOKA COUNTY:

The record books include copies of the application for a marriage license, of the authorization to issue the license, and of the return submitted by the marriage officiant certifying that the marriage occurred. Information in these records varies over time, but usually includes the county of residence of the bride and groom as part of the application. Over time, additional information is included, notably the ages and addresses of the bride and groom. The return notes where the marriage occurred and the name and status (clergy, justice, etc.) of the officiant.

The original marriage returns substantially duplicate the information in the marriage record books; however, there are many instances in which data varies in details or completeness.

The volumes on SAM 316 Rolls 11-28 were numbered by the court administrator for microfilming purposes. The original volume letter or number identifications added in brackets were found on interior pages or were deduced from internal evidence.

Volumes 54 [B] through 62 [J] include indexes, arranged alphabetically by first letter of the groom’s surname and thereunder chronologically, at the beginning of each volume. No bride indexes are present for these volumes. Volumes 63 [K] through 91 [39] include groom indexes at the beginning of each volume and similarly arranged bride indexes at the end of each volume. Both groom and bride indexes reference the other marriage partner.

Arranged in rough chronological order. No index. These records consist of the actual return of marriage filed with the court by the individual performing the marriage. Occasionally, additional correspondence may accompany the return. Presumably, these marriages also are recorded in the ‘official’ marriage books (above).
