            <abstract label="Abstract:">The 1980 Waste Management Act emphasized public participation in the siting of the hazardous waste facilities
                and the development of state hazardous waste management policies. These files document the board's efforts in that area, including community
                meetings in site proposal areas, public hearings on proposed hazardous waste facilities, Local Project Review Committees to review proposed
                hazardous waste disposal sites, and informational and citizen's meetings around the state on solid and hazardous waste problems.</abstract>

            <p>The correspondence files include public meetings and hearings notices for local, county, and regional development commission officials; requests
                for information about hazardous waste, particularly proposed sites and drilling schedules; and letters with consultants and experts, often
                concerning their appearances at the hearings.</p>
            <p>The subject files include publicity on the public meetings and hearings; general information on test drilling and agreements with landowners;
                materials pertaining to a League of Women Voters of Minnesota grant to cover hazardous waste legislation and citizen education; the board's
                relationship with the Legislative Commission on Waste Management; notifications sent to county auditors of proposed "preferred areas" for
                processing facilities; discussion outlines and background materials used during the meetings and hearings; meeting reports; and a slide 
                show script.</p>
