Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

Created by legislation passed in 2023, the State Emblems Redesign Commission [SERC] was formed to design a new state flag and state seal. The commission consists of 13 members appointed by the following: the Governor, the Indian Affairs Council, the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage, the Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs, the Council on Asian-Pacific Minnesotans, the Secretary of State, the Minnesota Historical Society, the Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board, the Minnesota Arts Board, and Explore Minnesota Tourism. In September 2023, the Commission held its first meeting. In October 2023, the committee opened public submissions for new flag and seal designs, and more than 2,600 designs were submitted during the month. The committee compiled all submissions and released them for public viewing and comment in November. The Commission determined the five seal and six flag finalist designs and, after public comment and display, reduced the six flag finalists to three finalists at its December 12 meeting. The Commission selected the final design on December 15 and adopted modifications on December 19. On December 29, 2023, the State Emblems Redesign Commission submitted its final report to the Office of the Governor and the Minnesota Legislature. Minnesota adopted its new state flag on May 11, 2024.
