Harry Lawrence's interview includes a history of the Dakota in Minnesota, particularly their residences on the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers, reminiscences of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 and Chief Little Crow's part in it. Elizabeth Lawrence's interview includes six songs sung in the Dakota language. Elizabeth, whose Dakota name is Morning Star, was the niece of Chief Little Crow.

OH 149.1Elizabeth Lawrence interview, April 25, 1965. 1 master audiotape reel: analog, 3 3/4 ips; 7 in. and 1 user copy audio disc (23 minutes, 58 seconds): MP3 (21.9 MB).
The recording includes six songs sung in Mrs. Lawrence's native Dakota language. She explains the origin of the first song, a love song, and then sings it. The second and third songs are a Presbyterian hymn and an Episcopalian hymn, respectively. The fourth is unidentified. The fifth song, "God's Creation," she learned as a child from her father, White Spider, is about obedience and honoring father and mother. The last piece is the words of her father heard from the morning star on the morning she was born.
