Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Auguste Louis Larpenteur, pioneer St. Paul, Minnesota settler, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on May 16, 1823, the son of Louis Augustine and Melinda (Simmons) Larpenteur. He came to St. Paul in 1843 and worked at the store of fur traders William E. Hartshorn and Henry Jackson as clerk and interpreter. From the 1850s through 1887 he was engaged, with partners or alone, in the fur trade, merchandise, wholesale grocery, commission, and real estate businesses. At various times during the 1860s and 1870s he had business associations with Henry C. Burbank and James C. Burbank, Amherst H. Wilder, and Channing Seabury. In 1888, after traveling to France and California, he retired in St. Paul. From the 1840s until his death in 1919 (on February 24) Larpenteur was active in many civic and political affairs of the city, county, territory, and state.

Larpenteur married Mary Josephine Presley in St. Paul in 1845; they had ten children.

Other family members represented in the papers include Charles Larpenteur, a fur trader who was the uncle of Auguste Louis, siblings Francis B. Larpenteur and Emily Larpenteur Zenzius, nephew and niece of Charles and first cousins of Auguste Louis, and Conrad Zenzius, Emily’s husband.
