Correspondence, minutes, financial and property records, and miscellany of the Bishop and Directorate and Bishop and Council (1934-), which functioned as the diocese's executive body. They concern diocesan administration and finances, property holdings, mission, religious education, clergy, social services, worship services, and (1944-1948) revision of canons. Also included are files of the Minnesota Church Foundation and the Diocese of Minnesota, Inc., corporations set up to hold title to diocesan properties and endowment bequests.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Expand/CollapseBISHOP AND DIRECTORATE/BISHOP AND COUNCIL RECORDS

The Bishop and Directorate was established by canon in 1920 to function as the executive body of the Diocese of Minnesota during the period between Councils. Consisting of the bishop, the bishop coadjutor or suffragan bishop, nine presbyters, and nine laymen, it directed the administration of the diocese's financial affairs and its missionary, educational, and social work. The canon also established the departments of Finance, Missions and Church Extension, Religious Education, Social Service, and Publicity. In 1934 the name was changed to the Bishop and Council.

The Diocese of Minnesota, Inc., is a corporation of the diocese set up to hold title to properties and endowment bequests. The few extant papers of the corporation for this period include minutes, correspondence and other papers relating to diocesan property, finances, investments, and trust funds; audit reports for the diocese; and files on the sale of the churches in Cannon City and Slayton.

The Minnesota Church Foundation was founded by Bishop Henry B. Whipple and six other clergymen in 1863 for the purpose of receiving and holding diocesan property. In 1939 the foundation transferred its assets to the Diocese of Minnesota, Inc.
