Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Rev. George C. TannerDr. George Clinton Tanner was born January 21, 1834, in West Greenwich, Rhode Island to Joseph (1803-1868) and Amy Kinne (Gates) Tanner (1814-1865). He was educated in the public schools of Voluntown (Connecticut), Plainfield Academy (Plainfield, Connecticut), Brown University, and the Seabury Divinity School. He received an M.A from Brown in 1857, was ordained a deacon in the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1860 and a priest in 1862, and was awarded a D.D. from Seabury Divinity School in 1894.

Tanner migrated to Minnesota Territory in 1857, opening the first graded school in Winona and serving as principal through 1858. Between 1858 and 1867 he taught classics and was headmaster at Bishop Seabury School (Faribault, Minnesota). In 1867 he became rector of St. Paul's Church in Owatonna (Minnesota) serving until 1887. Between 1872 and 1887 he also served as county superintendent of schools for Steele County (Minnesota) and as chaplain and headmaster at Bethany College (Topeka, Kansas) from November 1886 to June 1887. In 1887 he returned to Faribault as director of study at Shattuck School. In 1909 he became instructor in classics and liturgics at Seabury Divinity School, retiring in 1918 and continuing in an emeritus role until 1920. He served as registrar and Diocesan historian for the Diocese of Minnesota from 1878 to 1920.

Tanner served on the boards of numerous schools and was active in several educational fraternities, Masonic orders, and in the Society of Minnesota Territorial Pioneers. He authored many works on religious and family history.

Tanner died in Minneapolis on February 13, 1923. He was married to Emma Campbell (1831-1908) in 1857.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Tanner's papers include a draft of his "Fifty Years of Church Work in the Diocese of Minnesota" (published as History of the Diocese of Minnesota 1857-1907, St. Paul, 1909); biographical notes and articles on early missionaries and clergymen, especially Ezekiel G. Gear, James Lloyd Breck, Timothy Wilcoxson, Solon W. Manney, John C. Chamberlaine, Edward Livermore, E. Steele Peake, and bishops Henry B. Whipple and Jackson Kemper; addresses and articles on the diocesan schools in Faribault, particularly Shattuck School; notes and articles on missionary work among the Ojibwe Indians and white settlers and on early church work (1850s-1870s) in general; copies of letters and diaries of Breck, Peake, Manney, Kemper, and others; and reminiscences of Bishop Whipple. A file of Tanner's sermons and addresses is also present.

The parish histories consist largely of Tanner's notes and correspondence on the history of most of the early Episcopal parishes in Minnesota, arranged alphabetically by name of community. They concentrate almost exclusively on 19th century parish history. There are also letters to Tanner, mainly during the 1890s, from ministers and other people connected with various churches, giving more historical details. A few typescript and printed histories, newspaper clippings, communicant and baptism records, financial records, articles of incorporation, deeds, minutes, sermons, and 20th century brochures and programs are also present; some post-date Tanner. Files on a few other church institutions in Minneapolis and St. Paul are included.
