Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Denzil Angus Carty was born in St. John's Antigua, British West Indies, on March 30, 1904, the son of Robert A. and Cecil (Edwards) Carty. He was educated in the New York City high schools, the City College of New York, and the General Theological Seminary, New York City, where he studied for the Episcopal priesthood. He was ordained in New York City, and did graduate work at Xavier University (New Orleans) and at Wayne State University (Detroit).

In the 1930s Carty served three New York City parishes: All Souls', St. Philip's, and St. Luke's. During World War II he served (1944-1946) as captain and chaplain of the 512th Port Battalion in Europe. Carty came to St. Paul in 1950 as rector of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, a black congregation in the Summit-University neighborhood, which he served until his retirement in June, 1975. He died August 24, 1975.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The papers reveal Carty's activities in the following organizations: American Legion, Department of Minnesota; Fair Employment Practices Commission; National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; St. Paul Urban Coalition; St. Paul Urban League; St. Paul Housing and Redevelopment Authority; the St. Paul and Minnesota councils of human and civil rights; and the St. Paul Opportunities and Industrialization Center.

Civil and human rights organizations and activities, especially in St. Paul and Minnesota, are well documented in the papers, as are evidences of discrimination in schooling, housing, and employment. Carty took an active role in the organizations noted above and worked closely with civic, religious, and political leaders on the local, state, and national levels.
