Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The association got its start at an informal meeting (October 20, 1875) held in Stillwater, Minnesota, at which it was decided to form an organization for people who had settled in the St. Croix River Valley prior to 1860. A November 5 meeting in the Stillwater law offices of Durant and Wheeler established the association, which was initially chaired by Charles E. Leonard, with David B. Loomis serving as its secretary. A November 17 meeting established its purposes as maintaining friendly acquainceships among old settlers, and preserving history and reminiscences of the valley. A second meeting in 1876 established a committee to locate and list settlers who had died or moved away.
