The Minnesota Agriculture Instructors Association was organized in 1911 and in 1917 became known as the Minnesota Vocational Agriculture Instructors Association. In 1999 the association changed its name to the Minnesota Association of Agriculture Educators. The MVAIA was affiliated with the Minnesota Vocational Association, the American Vocational Association, and the National Vocational Agricultural Teachers' Association (NVATA). The MVAIA was also associated with the student organization, Minnesota Future Farmers of America (FFA).

Developed by The Farmer magazine from a recommendation of a MVAIA task force, "Aspirations" originally appeared in the August 17, 1991 issue of The Farmer. Accompanied by a "Users Guide" directed at librarians, school counselors, and teachers, and a cover letter from the publisher of The Farmer.
