Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

Minnesota Women's Press, Inc., was founded in St. Paul in 1984 by Mollie Hoben and Glenda Martin to publish a biweekly newspaper with a feminist perspective aimed at an audience of Minnesota women. Following a prototype issue created in October 1984, the newspaper entitled Minnesota Women's Press was launched on April 16, 1985. In subsequent years, the organization expanded to include, in addition to the newspaper, BookWomen, a magazine devoted to women writers; the Minnesota Women's Directory, a directory of women's organizations and women in business; a Center for Feminist Reading, which conducts book groups and reading retreats for women; and a membership library of books related to women and women's issues.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The collection consists of photographic prints of images published in the newspaper Minnesota Women's Press. Each issue from the newspaper's inception in April 1985 through mid-2002 is represented by a folder with the photographic prints used in the publication of that issue. Photos for a number of issues are missing from the collection.

For the most part, the photos are housed in the original folders from the files of Minnesota Women's Press. Photos are of various sizes, and the vast majority are in black and white. Most of the photos are mounted with cellophane tape to pieces of standard white office paper. Most of these sheets of paper and many of the folders include handwritten notes pertaining to subjects, photographers, and events.

The majority of the photographs are professionally-shot and printed images taken by freelance photographers. Some are publicity photos sent to Minnesota Women's Press by other organizations. A few non-photographic items, such as graphs and hand-drawn illustrations, can also be found in the collection.
