William A. Roberson (1836-1878) was a free African American born in Kentucky whose descendents settled in St. Paul in the 1880s. He and his wife, Lucy Jefferson Roberson (1839-1931) had four children: Celia Lee, William A. Jr., Francis (Frank), and Laura Violet. His son-in-law, Charles E. James (1866-1923), was a president of the St. Paul Trades and Labor Assembly and leader of the Boot and Shoe Workers Union.
