Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Flooded tracks in Hastings, 1965Due to rapid melting of heavy winter snows and persistent April rains, record-breaking flooding occurred in the Mississippi River in the spring of 1965. In addition to the traditional damage caused by rising water, several ice dams broke causing further destruction.

These images, commissioned by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company, document the damage and flooding along the rail lines in Wisconsin in Minnesota. They also feature views of individuals sandbagging to help control the floodwaters.
