Provenance:

The photograph collection was part of the Bishop Whipple collection of artifacts that is now at the Minnesota Historical Society. The collection was compiled by Whipple and added to after his death in 1901. In 1937? the entire collection of artifacts and photographs was separated into two collections. One collection was given to the Bishop Whipple’s School Corporation in Faribault, Minnesota and the other collection was administered by Alice Best Rogers and loaned for exhibit to the Faribault House in Mendota, Minnesota.

In 1938 the Sibley House Association of the Minnesota Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) purchased the collection from Ms. Rogers. The DAR cataloged and exhibited the collection and it was cataloged again in 1981 by Sibley House staff. In 2002 the photographs in the collection were transferred to the Minnesota Historical Society’s Sound & Visual Collection.

Included in the collection finding aid are locator numbers assigned by the Sibley House Association of the Minnesota Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Sibley House staff during cataloging of the collection.

Expand/CollapseRELATED MATERIAL

Whipple’s official diocesan diaries and a small quantity of his correspondence are found among the papers of the Protestant Episcopal Church, Diocese of Minnesota. Additional Whipple personal correspondence as well as papers relating to his children and grandchildren are cataloged as the Whipple-Scandrett Family Papers. Two scrapbooks (1850-1932) kept by Whipple and members of his family are also available on microfilm (call number M179).

Bishop Henry B. Whipple, circa 1875 Whipple's papers are also available. These papers consist primarily of correspondence, diaries, sermons, reminiscences, and other materials. They provide information on ecclesiastical policy, Diocese of Minnesota matters, Indian missions, government relations with the Indians, and the Indian rights movement of the latter 19th century.
