Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The Ridder family has long been associated with the newspaper empire. In 1927, Lee Owens and Bernard, Joseph, and Victor Ridder, purchased the St. Paul Dispatch and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The Ridders were sons of Herman Ridder, a New York newspaper publisher. Generations of the Ridder family worked for the St. Paul papers and for newspapers across the country.

In 1974 Ridder Publications, Inc. merged with Knight Newspapers, Inc. to form Knight-Ridder, one of the United States' largest newspaper publishers. During the mid nineteen eighties, the two St. Paul papers combined into one. In 2006 Knight-Ridder was sold to the McClatchy Company.
