SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Ah-Gwah-Ching, then known as the Minnesota State Sanatorium for Consumptives, was built in 1907. It was Minnesota's first state-run facility for patients suffering from tuberculosis. As reported cases of tuberculosis increased, more patients came to Ah-Gwah-Ching for treatment. The fresh air and camp-like atmosphere were considered essential for rehabilitation.
Several photograph views feature patients enjoying the outdoors and staying in cabins. The sanatorium gained a reputation for fine arts, as many patients wrote and performed plays, as well as cultivated an extensive art collection. Many of the photographs in this collection feature patients in costume and special celebrations. In the 1930s, as the threat of tuberculosis waned, Ah-Gwah-Ching housed a prison camp, and later, a nursing home.
