Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

This collection consists of 45 black and white, mounted contemporary portraits of generals and other significant persons active during the United State Civil War (1861-1865) taken between 1860 and 1880. Images include studio portraits predominately of Union generals in military uniform, as well as supporters or government officials that served during the war. The only Confederate Army general to be included in this collection is a portrait of Robert E. Lee standing in front of his home in Arlington, Virginia. Also included is a studio portrait of former Civil War general and President of the United States Ulysses S. Grant taken during the post-war period approximately between 1869 and 1880.

The photographs in this collection were created from negatives made under the administration of photographer Mathew B. Brady and currently administered by the National Archives as part of the Mathew Brady Collection of Civil War Photographs (Record Group 111). All of the prints in this collection with the exception of the Grant portrait included a coordinating photograph number on the back of the mounting. These numbers have been indicated in the finding aid. While the Grant portrait has been identified as a Brady photograph, the exact negative number for this portrait is unknown.
