The Central Corridor Light Rail Transit is an eleven-mile light rail line operated by
Metro Transit that connects downtown St. Paul and downtown Minneapolis by way of the
University of Minnesota and University Avenue. The line follows the path of an
original street car line built along the University Avenue corridor in 1890, which
was paved over in 1953 and excavated during construction of the new rail line.
Planning activities for rapid transit along the Central Corridor date back to the
1970s and 1980s, but it wasn’t until the Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority
(RCRRA) began preparing an “Alternatives Analysis and Environmental Impact Statement
for the Central Corridor” in 2001 that major efforts were made to develop the area.
Project responsibility transitioned to the Metropolitan Council in 2006 with
applications to the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts Program for
permission to begin preliminary engineering. Following approval of an Environmental
Impact Statement, budget, and final design, the project began heavy construction on
the Central Corridor in 2010 with construction starting in downtown St. Paul and
near the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Construction of the line
employed approximately 5,500 construction, engineering and other workers during the
project, resulting in the addition of eighteen new stations, plus five stations
shared with the Blue Line (Hiawatha LRT) in downtown Minneapolis by the time
construction ended in 2012. In July 2011 the Metropolitan Council officially named
the Central Corridor the Green Line and service between the two downtowns began on
June 14, 2014.

This collection is comprised of 281, color photographs documenting the construction
of the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit (METRO Green Line) from 2010 to 2013,
connecting downtown St. Paul to downtown Minneapolis. The majority of the images
show light rail construction in various stages of completion from pre-construction
snapshots of intersections to final, or close to final, completion before the route
was opened in 2014. Images show construction crews excavating sites, pouring
concrete, construction of platforms and stations; laying track and other general
construction views. Also included are images of other projects along the light rail
line, such as construction of the Habitat for Humanity building near Prior Avenue in
St. Paul, the building of the Senate Office Building near the capitol along
University Avenue, as well as an image of the veiled Hubert H. Humphrey statue
outside the state capitol the day before the unveiling on August 4, 2012. This
collection does not contain photographs of the shared track or platform stations
used by both the Green and Blue light rail lines.

Images are arranged into subseries based on nearest geographical location and then
arranged chronologically thereafter starting in downtown St. Paul and headed west
towards downtown Minneapolis, ending near Washington Avenue and 35W.
