Guybert Marion Phillips was born in Dawson, Minnesota in 1896 and graduated from Central High School in St. Paul in 1914 or 1915. Phillips attended Hamline University and in his sophomore or junior year, volunteered for World War I and was assigned to ambulance unit S.S.U. 568 and served as a driver throughout France from 1917 to 1919. For his service Phillips was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Upon his return home, he opened the investment firm Caldwell-Phillips.

Photographer's caption: A front view of the Reims Cathedral taken in a rain. The building was irreparably damaged and is at its worst in this picture as the last Boehe shell to explode in Reims was fired that morning. A city of 125,000 inhabitants and we were unable to find one home which was not damaged.
