Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Leroy “Roy” Baumgarn was born on July 19, 1920 in Moneta, Iowa, one of seven children born to John Baumgarn and Mary Trojahn. In September of 1924 the family moved to Lakefield, Minnesota, however, the following year his mother Mary died of a cerebral hemorrhage. After the completion of the eighth grade Roy went to live with his aunt Hilda and uncle Adolph Zinn near Lakefield, Minnesota working on the couples farm. In January 1937 Roy applied and was accepted into the Civilian Conservation Corps at Fort Snelling and assigned to Company 719, Camp S-51 at Brimson, Minnesota. Baumgarn was discharged from the CCC camp on March 31, 1938 and moved to Lake Park, Iowa to work for his father as a carpenter helper from January to July 1939. In October 1939 Roy reenrolled in the CCC and was assigned to Company 1754, Camp SCS-31 at Cherokee, Iowa registering at Spirit Lake, Iowa where he worked until his discharge in September 1940.
